About Us

The Commission

What began as the Black Metropolis Project in 2004 with a 25 Member Steering Committee of cultural historians and community preservationists has stayed the course to secure the Congressional designation for the National Heritage Area. In the 117th Congress with the passage of S. 1942, the National Heritage Area Act. The Bronzeville-Black Metropolis National Heritage Area will carry on preserving the history and culture of a great Chicago neighborhood. 


Civic Entrepreneurs

Bronzeville-Black Metropolis National Heritage Area works in conjunction with community entrepreneurs called the Bronzeville Community Development Partnership to continue the goal of urban planning and mobility, destination marketing, and tourism. Heritage destination tourism is promoted through innovative tours and visits to diverse attractions in Bronzeville, including historical sites and cultural events throughout the year.
